How To Turn Your Car Into a Wi-Fi Hotspot: Part Deux

My last installment of How to turn your car into a Wi-Fi Hotspot was very popular although the cost was not. This time, I've rounded up the latest and greatest in mobile Wi-Fi routers that are all the rage these days, and more affordable.

Kyocera's KR1 (D-Link DI-725) Mobile Router:

The KR1 Mobile Router allows you to create a wireless broadband network virtually anywhere. It uses 1xEV-DO as its WAN backhaul and functions like an access point supporting multiple computers and devices with high-speed wireless data services. All you need is a 1xEV-DO card or phone*. The KR1 Mobile Router is especially useful for mobile work groups such as dispatch teams, consultants, road-warrior sales groups, satellite offices, command posts, and more. It can also be used as a reliable alternative for fixed broadband services in your home.

Cost: $299.00

  • Broadband connectivity and universal compatibility with a 1xEV-DO PC card or phone with tethered data capability enables you to set up a WiFi hotspot virtually anywhere*.
  • Multiple users can share high-speed connections with rates up to 2.4 Mbps (typical download speed of 400-700 Kbps).
  • Browser-based configuration and easy set-up wizard.
  • Smooth migration to future 1xEV-DO releases.

How-To: Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot

Tired of visiting coffee shops and paying extra to use their Wi-Fi connection? Boss says no to paying extra for High Speed Internet at hotels? I've just read two very fascinating how-to articles that will help solve these issues and get you surfing, downloading and whatever else you do with a High Speed Internet connection on the go.

Junxion_box The first article, Wi-Fi to Go: The Hot Spot in a Box, is by David Pogue of the New York Times and he reviews the various portable Wi-Fi routers available from several manufacturers. He goes into nice detail about the features, cost and which cellular carriers each model is compatible with.

Stompbox The second article, EVDO Stompbox Project, by Tor Armundson, is a true DIY project. Once completed, you will have a sweet, low cost, portable Wi-Fi connection for your car, briefcase, hotel room or wherever you wish to use it. This project is specifically for the Verizon EVDO BroadbandAccess service.

How to turn your car into a Wi-Fi Hotspot

Is your car your office? If not it sure could be. RaySat, a manufacturer of DBS satellite antennas for cars, is introducing the RaySat SpeedRay™ 3000 which offers vehicles on-the-move, high-speed Internet access and satellite TV using a low profile (5.7”) roof mounted KU-band satellite antenna. The system provides vehicle passengers with an in-car hotspot, easy IP based network access plus live satellite TV.

The SpeedRay™ 3000 system consists of an outdoor antenna unit for satellite signal reception (data and TV), indoor antenna controller, satellite modem (for Internet access), WiFi router and a DBS satellite receiver (for live satellite TV). Integrated advanced sensors and a sophisticated tracking system provide access while the vehicle is in-motion or stationary. The SpeedRay™ 3000 antenna mounts securely to the cross bars of a vehicle roof rack or alternatively, RaySat manufacturers special brackets for RV and truck installations.

The SpeedRay™ 3000 is the world's first vehicle-based satellite antenna providing in-motion, high-speed Internet access to motorists, including emergency personnel, riding in cars, trucks, or motor homes. The new SpeedRay™ 3000 is based on an enclosed low profile, roof-mounted antenna that enables Internet access to laptops, PDAs, or other devices equipped with Wi-Fi wireless networking technology.

The innovative system provides high-speed Internet access that can be shared among users in the vehicle. In addition, the SpeedRay™ 3000 provides moving vehicles with strong reception of digital satellite TV and music channels. Since it communicates solely via satellite, the antenna can be used effectively in remote areas where cellular and land-line connections are not available.
